There is something magical about Arizona family photos in the desert. Between the golden light, rugged mountain views, and wide-open spaces for little ones to explore, it’s one of my favorite settings for family photography.
This sweet family chose the Superstition Mountains near Lost Dutchman State Park for their family session, and it was the perfect backdrop for capturing genuine connection, laughter, and all the little moments that make this season of life so special.
As a Scottsdale family photographer, one of the questions I hear most often is:
“What if my kids don’t cooperate?”
The truth is, most children don’t want to stand still and smile on command for an hour, and honestly, I don’t expect them to.
My approach to family photography is centered around play.
Rather than asking children to sit perfectly and look at the camera the entire session, I create opportunities for movement, games, and connection. Kids naturally light up when they’re having fun, and those authentic expressions are what parents treasure most years later.
During family sessions, we might:
These simple activities create natural smiles and help children feel comfortable in front of the camera.
If you’re planning family photos in Scottsdale, Phoenix, Mesa, or the surrounding Arizona areas, here are a few tips to help your session go smoothly.
This might sound surprising, but repeatedly reminding children to “be good” before family photos often creates unnecessary pressure.
Instead, tell them you’re going on a fun family adventure where you’ll play games and spend time together.
The less pressure they feel, the more relaxed they tend to be.
Hungry kids rarely enjoy family photos.
Pack a few non-messy snacks and water so little ones can refuel if needed. I always build flexibility into sessions because children have different energy levels and needs.
One of the biggest misconceptions about family photography is that children need to sit still and smile perfectly.
Some of my favorite images happen when children are running, cuddling their parents, laughing, or simply being themselves.
Those real moments tell your family’s story.

Whenever possible, schedule around naps and avoid planning a packed day beforehand.
Well-rested children are usually more relaxed and ready to engage.
Parents are often surprised by how quickly I can capture beautiful images, even when they feel like their child is all over the place.
Children don’t need to look at the camera for every photo. Some of the most meaningful images are the ones that capture connection, movement, and personality.
The area near Lost Dutchman State Park offers some of the most iconic Arizona scenery.
With sweeping desert landscapes, towering saguaros, and breathtaking mountain views, it creates a timeless backdrop that highlights your family without distracting from the moments we’re capturing.
The warm desert tones photograph beautifully year-round and create a classic Arizona look that never goes out of style.
If you’re looking for a Scottsdale family photographer who focuses on genuine connection, playful interactions, and stress-free family photos, I’d love to help.
My goal is never to force perfect smiles. Instead, I create an experience where children can play, parents can relax, and authentic moments naturally unfold.
The result is a gallery filled with real memories that reflect exactly who your family is right now.
