Forty years of marriage. Forty years of memories, laughter, adventures, and building a life together. If that’s not something worth celebrating, I don’t know what is!
I recently had the sweetest opportunity to photograph this wonderful couple at Butcher Jones Beach in Arizona. They were celebrating two very special occasions: their 40th wedding anniversary and a birthday!
But what made this session even more meaningful was that it was a surprise gift from their daughter.
And honestly, I can’t think of a much sweeter way to celebrate your parents than giving them beautiful photos together.
As an Arizona family photographer, I get to capture so many exciting milestones, from growing families and new babies to engagements and weddings. But there’s something especially meaningful about photographing a couple who has already spent decades building a life together.
This Butcher Jones anniversary photography session was such a beautiful reminder that love stories deserve to be documented at every stage.
If you’ve never visited Butcher Jones Beach at Saguaro Lake, you’re missing out on one of Arizona’s beautiful desert locations!
Located in the Tonto National Forest near Mesa, Butcher Jones offers a unique combination of peaceful lake views, rocky desert mountains, and towering saguaro cacti.
It’s one of those places that feels distinctly Arizona.
For this anniversary session, the natural scenery provided such a beautiful backdrop. The soft colors of the desert, the calm water, and the surrounding mountains complemented this couple’s blue and white outfits perfectly.
I loved how their photos included a combination of traditional portraits and playful, candid moments.
We captured sweet smiles, walking hand in hand along the shoreline, and even a few fun moments that showed off their personalities.
And can we talk about how adorable it is when a husband still kisses his wife on the forehead after 40 years of marriage?!
Those are the moments I love photographing.
Because while beautiful scenery is always a bonus, the connection between the people in front of my camera is what makes the photographs meaningful.

When most people think about professional couple portraits, they immediately think about engagements or weddings.
And while those are wonderful milestones to photograph, your wedding day shouldn’t be the last time you have professional photos taken together!
Think about everything that happens after the wedding.
You build a home. Maybe you raise children. You experience changes, challenges, celebrations, and countless everyday moments that eventually become your story.
And somewhere along the way, the years start adding up.
Anniversary photography is an opportunity to celebrate everything you’ve built together.
Whether you’re celebrating your 10th, 25th, 40th, or 50th wedding anniversary, having updated portraits gives you something tangible to remember this chapter of your life.
I especially love photographing couples who have been married for decades because there’s often such a natural comfort between them.
The little glances, the familiar smiles, and the way they laugh together tell a story that doesn’t need much direction.
This couple was such a wonderful example of that.
Their Butcher Jones Beach photos are filled with genuine joy, and I love that they’ll have these memories to look back on for years to come.
One of my favorite details about this session was that the couple’s daughter surprised them with their anniversary photos.
What a thoughtful gift!
If you’ve ever struggled to find the perfect present for your parents or grandparents, you know how difficult it can be to shop for someone who seems to have everything they need.
Another candle? Another picture frame? Another gift card?
Sometimes the most meaningful gifts aren’t things at all.
Gifting a professional photography session is a beautiful way to give someone an experience and memories they can enjoy long after the celebration is over.
Instead of another item sitting on a shelf, you’re giving them the opportunity to spend time together, celebrate an important milestone, and have beautiful portraits to remember it.
And those photos don’t just become special to the couple.
They become meaningful to their children, grandchildren, and future generations, too.
I love thinking about how this couple’s daughter will also get to enjoy these images of her parents celebrating 40 years of marriage.
That’s what makes photography such a special gift. The value of those images often grows with time.

You don’t have to wait for a 40th wedding anniversary to surprise someone with a photography session!
There are so many occasions when professional portraits make a thoughtful gift.
Wedding anniversaries: Celebrate the years you’ve spent together with updated couple portraits.
Milestone birthdays: Whether someone is turning 30, 50, 70, or 80, a birthday is a wonderful reason to document this season of life.
Parents and grandparents: Give your loved ones the opportunity to have beautiful photos together, either as a couple or with their family.
Mother’s Day or Father’s Day: A photography session can be a meaningful alternative to a traditional gift.
Family celebrations: If everyone is gathering for a special occasion, it may be the perfect opportunity to update family portraits.
One thing I always recommend when gifting photography is considering the recipient’s personality and preferences.
Some people love outdoor desert sessions, while others might feel more comfortable in a studio setting.
As a Queen Creek photographer, I offer both outdoor photography sessions and studio portraits, so we can choose an experience that feels right for the people being photographed.
And if you’re planning a surprise, we can discuss the details ahead of time to help make the experience as enjoyable as possible.
Have someone in your life who would absolutely love a gift like this? Whether it’s for an anniversary, birthday, or just because, a photography session is such a meaningful way to celebrate the people you love. Reach out to me here, and let’s plan something special for them!
One of the things I love about photographing couples at Butcher Jones is the variety of scenery we can capture in one location.
You have the beautiful water of Saguaro Lake, desert mountains, rocky shoreline, and iconic Arizona saguaros.
It’s such a pretty combination!
The natural landscape adds texture and warmth to photos without taking attention away from the couple.
For this anniversary session, I especially loved the images taken right along the water.
The couple’s soft blue outfits looked beautiful against the earthy desert colors, and the lake created such a peaceful background.
Butcher Jones is also a wonderful location for couples who want something a little different from traditional desert portraits.
You still get that beautiful Arizona scenery, but with the added element of water.
As with any outdoor photography location, lighting, weather, and access can affect the experience, so I always recommend planning your session with those details in mind.

Can I share something I wish more couples knew?
You don’t need to be newly engaged, newly married, or celebrating a major anniversary to book professional photos together.
Your relationship is worth documenting right now.
I know it can sometimes feel awkward to step in front of a camera, especially if it’s been years since your last professional photography session.
But you don’t have to know how to pose or worry about what to do with your hands.
That’s my job!
I love helping couples feel comfortable while capturing a combination of naturally posed portraits and genuine interactions.
Sometimes that means walking together, sitting close, sharing a laugh, or simply looking at each other.
The goal isn’t to make every photo look perfectly posed.
It’s to create beautiful images that feel like you.
And after 40 years of marriage, there’s already a pretty amazing story to tell.
And that goes for every stage of your love story! Whether you’re celebrating 40 years of marriage or just starting your journey together, I love capturing those genuine connections. You can see more of what that looks like in this Arizona engagement photography session.
Absolutely! A professional photography session can be a wonderful gift for parents, grandparents, or another special couple in your life.
If you’re hoping to surprise someone with photos, contact me before making arrangements so we can discuss the session details and how to plan the gift.
Butcher Jones Beach is located along Saguaro Lake in the Tonto National Forest, northeast of Mesa, Arizona.
It’s a beautiful location for outdoor photography, featuring lake views, desert mountains, and saguaro cacti.
I recommend choosing outfits that feel comfortable, coordinate well together, and complement your photography location.
For desert and lakeside sessions, soft blues, creams, neutrals, and earthy tones photograph beautifully.
You don’t need to match perfectly! Instead, choose complementary colors and avoid overly busy patterns that might distract from your faces.
Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel confident.
Not at all!
I’ll help guide you throughout your session so you don’t have to worry about knowing what to do.
My goal is to capture a beautiful combination of portraits and natural interactions that reflect your personalities and relationship.
