There is something really special about photographing someone simply because they want to celebrate who they are.
Not every photography session needs to mark an engagement, a new baby, or a big family milestone. Sometimes, the reason is as simple as wanting beautiful photographs of yourself, exactly as you are in this season of life.
That’s what made Claire’s portrait session at Hagen Farms in Queen Creek, Arizona, so meaningful.
At 70 years old, Claire was celebrating something fun: she had just gotten her braces off! And after never having a professional portrait session before, she decided it was finally time.
I loved getting to photograph her and capture her genuine smile, personality, and confidence against the beautiful greenery at Hagen Farms.
One of my favorite things about portrait photography is that no two sessions have to look the same.
For Claire’s session, we chose Hagen Farms in Queen Creek, Arizona, a beautiful outdoor setting with natural greenery, trees, and soft light. The surroundings gave us a lovely backdrop without distracting from the person we were there to photograph.
And that’s exactly what I wanted for Claire.
Rather than creating a session filled with stiff, traditional headshot poses, we focused on relaxed portraits that felt natural and comfortable. Some photographs featured her beautiful smile, while others captured quieter expressions and little details that made the gallery feel personal.
The result was a collection of portraits that celebrated Claire without needing an elaborate occasion.
Claire is a mom of four, a grandmother who loves spending time with her grandkids, and someone who enjoys lifting weights and staying active.
I love learning these little details about the people I photograph because they remind me that everyone brings their own story to a portrait session.
For Claire, this wasn’t about trying to look younger or becoming someone different in front of the camera. It was about documenting who she is right now.
And after getting her braces off, she had another reason to show off that gorgeous smile!
I think we sometimes get so busy documenting everyone else’s milestones that we forget how important it is to have photographs of ourselves, too.
Especially for moms.
We’re often the ones planning the family pictures, making sure everyone has something to wear, and reminding the kids to smile. But how often do we schedule a session that’s just for us?
Claire’s session was such a beautiful reminder that you don’t need to wait for a particular age, occasion, or life event to step in front of the camera.

As a Queen Creek portrait photographer, I love creating images that feel timeless and authentic.
Personal portrait photography is different from traditional family photography or even a standard professional headshot session. It’s an opportunity to focus entirely on one person and create images that reflect their personality.
Maybe you’re celebrating a birthday, entering a new chapter, updating photographs of yourself, or simply realizing that you haven’t had a beautiful portrait taken in years.
Those are all wonderful reasons to book a session.
And if you’re feeling a little nervous about being photographed alone, you’re definitely not the only one!
You don’t need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands. That’s my job. I’ll help guide you through the session so that we can create photographs that feel comfortable and natural.
Some of my favorite images happen in the little in-between moments when someone relaxes, laughs, or gives me a genuine smile.
That’s the kind of portrait photography I love most.
Hagen Farms was such a lovely location for Claire’s Queen Creek portrait session.
The green surroundings added beautiful texture and depth to her photographs, while the outdoor setting helped create a softer, more relaxed feeling than a traditional studio headshot.
We incorporated a variety of portraits throughout the session, including closer photographs that highlighted Claire’s expressions and wider images that showed more of the natural surroundings.
Her blue top looked beautiful against the greenery, and the colorful wrap she wore in some of her photographs added another layer of personality to the gallery.
I love when clients bring something that feels like them, whether that’s a favorite outfit, an accessory, or simply a smile they’re excited to share.
For personal portraits, those details can make the photographs feel even more meaningful.

Although I offer professional headshot photography in Queen Creek and the surrounding East Valley, personal portraits have a slightly different focus.
Professional headshots are often created with a specific purpose in mind, such as updating a business website, LinkedIn profile, or professional biography.
Personal portrait sessions give us a little more freedom.
We can focus on natural expressions, different compositions, outfit changes, and photographs that tell more of your individual story.
Of course, the two can overlap! A beautiful personal portrait can also work wonderfully as a professional profile photograph.
The most important thing is creating images that you feel good about and genuinely enjoy sharing.
For Claire, that meant a gallery filled with relaxed, beautiful photographs that celebrated her personality and this chapter of her life.
One of the questions I hear most often before a portrait session is what to wear.
My biggest recommendation is to choose clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident.
You don’t need an entirely new wardrobe or something completely different from your everyday style.
For outdoor portrait sessions around Queen Creek, Mesa, Gilbert, and the surrounding East Valley, solid colors and simple patterns often photograph beautifully.
Soft blues, creams, earthy neutrals, and muted colors can complement natural outdoor settings without pulling attention away from your face.
You can also bring a second layer or accessory to create variety without changing your entire outfit.
Claire’s colorful wrap was a perfect example of how one simple addition can give photographs a completely different look.
Most importantly, choose something that feels like you. Your portraits should reflect your personality, not someone else’s idea of what you should wear.
