In-Home Newborn Photography in Gilbert, Arizona

There is something incredibly special about photographing a brand-new baby right at home.

No packing everyone into the car. No trying to make your house look perfect. No worrying about whether your older children will cooperate in an unfamiliar space. Instead, your newborn gets to be photographed in the place where they are already comfortable — surrounded by their crib, their favorite blankets, their nursery, and all of those tiny details that make this season of life yours.

This family welcomed their new baby into their beautiful Gilbert home, and we spent the session documenting the little moments that happen naturally when everyone is together. When Should You Schedule Newborn Photos?

One of the questions I hear most often is, “When should we do our newborn session?”

For those dreamy, sleepy newborn photographs, I generally recommend scheduling your session within the first couple of weeks after your baby arrives. Many families choose somewhere around 5–14 days old, but there isn’t a magic deadline.

Babies don’t read the newborn photography rulebook.

Some babies are sleepy at three weeks. Some are wide awake at seven days. Some families need a little extra time to settle in after coming home from the hospital — and that’s completely okay.

If you’re planning newborn photos in Gilbert, AZ, I recommend reaching out during pregnancy and reserving your session based on your due date. Once your baby arrives, we’ll choose the actual session date.

And if your baby is already a few weeks old?

Don’t worry.

How to Prepare for an In-Home Newborn Session

The best part about an in-home session is that preparation is actually pretty simple.

1. Don’t stress about cleaning everything

Seriously.

Your photographer doesn’t need your entire house spotless. We’ll focus on the rooms with the best light and move anything distracting if necessary.

A quick tidy-up of the bedroom, nursery, and main living areas is plenty.

2. Keep your baby comfortable

Try to feed your baby shortly before the session begins if possible. A full belly often means a happy, sleepy baby, but don’t worry if your baby needs to eat during the session.

Newborn sessions are baby-led.

We can stop for feeding, diaper changes, cuddles, or anything else your baby needs.

3. Dress the family simply

For lifestyle newborn photography, I love soft, neutral clothing that keeps the focus on the people rather than the outfits.

White, cream, beige, denim, soft blues, muted greens, and other neutral tones photograph beautifully in a home.

And you don’t have to dress everyone identically.

Coordinating is much better than matching.

4. Have a few meaningful items nearby

If there is something special you’d like photographed with your baby, have it ready.

It could be a favorite blanket, stuffed animal, hospital bracelet, heirloom, announcement item, or something from the nursery.

These little details can become some of my favorite photographs.

5. Don’t worry if your toddler isn’t cooperating

This one is HUGE.

If you have an older sibling, please don’t spend the entire morning telling them they have to “be good for pictures.”

Toddlers are toddlers.

They may want to run around. They may be fascinated by the baby for 30 seconds and then completely over it.

That’s okay.

Newborn Photos With Siblings

One of my favorite parts of this Gilbert newborn photography session was incorporating the older sibling.

When a new baby arrives, so much attention naturally shifts toward the newborn. Photographing those early interactions between siblings gives you something you’ll treasure later.
